WEEE Regulations
WEEE Regulations
All electrical equipment now must be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way to help prevent further industrial pollution. As a supplier of electrical tools and equipment we have a responsibility to have a documented procedure to compile with the regulations. We have therefore implemented a process to ensure that any products that fall under the WEEE
regulations are disposed of safely and correctly minimizing the impact on our environment.
WEEE Regulations Explained
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive is now UK Law. The legislation aims to make producers pay for the collection, treatment and recovery of waste electrical equipment. The regulations also mean that suppliers of equipment must allow customers to return their waste equipment at no extra cost.
The amount of WEEE we throw away is increasing by around 5% each year, making it the fastest growing waste stream in the UK, much of it ending up in landfill, where the lead and other toxins it contains can cause soil and water contamination. This can have a harmful effect on the natural habitat, wildlife and also human health. Many electrical products and batteries that are thrown away can be fully recycled. Recycling items helps to save our natural finite resources and also reduces the environmental and health risks associated with the sending of, or disposal of electrical goods to landfill.
Trade and wholesale distributors of new Electric and Electronic Equipment (EEE) have a part to play in reducing the amount of WEEE going into landfill sites but we need your assistance.
Working With Our Customers To Recycle
As a reputable distributor of battery powered and corded power tools is obliged under these regulations to offer our customer base a free take-back service of WEEE products on a like-for-like basis when they purchase new electrical tools and accessories from us.
Customers when purchasing a new power tool or power tool accessory i.e. spare or replacement batteries from our company can hand in their worn-out drill preventing it going into a landfill site by disposing of it safely through our WEEE disposal scheme. Customers must return their WEEE item to us within 28 days of purchasing their own new item, and at their own cost. A suitable alternative to sending the tools back would be to dispose of them at a local recycling centre now available throughout the whole of the UK. The website www.recycle-more.co.uk provides help and advice on all aspects of recycling and will advise you where you’re nearest Designated Collection Facility (DCF) can be located.
You may ask what do we do with the recycled tools, Any WEEE complaint products that we collect, will be disposed of by taking them to a professional recycling centre, at present we have a contract with William Tracey Recycling and Resource Management Group, a large fully certified waste company where all components are professionally recycled.
We have a responsibly to offer this service, we all owe it to future generations, this is well worth doing because it makes a definite difference, the planet looks after us now, it’s our turn to step up and do our bit.
Please remember that we can only take back like for like products and only when the customer has purchased a new product from us.
Our Guidelines
We offer to take back waste of the same type as the item our customer has purchased from us, regardless of:
• whether they purchase in-store, online or by mail order
• the brand of the item
We will also take back items that have the same function. For example, we would:
• take back a customer’s old drill when they buy a new one
• take back a video player if the customer buys a DVD player
